How we learn

We’ve taken inspiration from the pioneers of early learning and blended the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, Forest School education and our own Storal programmes. Our hybrid approach allows children to reach their full potential at their own pace and in their own time.

A love of learning is central to our ethos, fostering both curiosity and self-confidence in children. In our nursery, you’ll find learning environments that capture their imagination, get them exploring and deepen their understanding of the world around them.

Our experienced team creates opportunities for curiosity, challenge and wonder across an array of areas including emotional development, physical development, literacy, maths and learning about the world.

How we learn

At our nursery each child has a key person who:

The EYFS curriculum

There are seven areas of Learning and Development within EYFS. Whilst all are important and inter-connected, the framework splits learning into three ‘Prime Areas’ and four ‘Specific Areas’.

The Prime Areas are fundamental to igniting a child’s curiosity and building their capacity to learn. These are: Communication and Language; Physical Development; and Personal, Social and Emotional Development.

The Specific Areas strengthen and apply the Prime Areas. These are: Literacy; Mathematics; Understanding the World; and Expressive Art and Design.

  • Communication and language

    Providing an environment where children grow their confidence and learn to express themselves in a variety of situations.

  • Physical development

    Helping children develop their co-ordination, control, and movement through active and interactive play. Children are also taught about the importance of physical activity and healthy eating.

  • Personal, social and emotional development

    Providing an environment where children grow their confidence and learn to express themselves in a variety of situations.

  • Literacy

    Encouraging children to link sounds and letters and begin to read and write. Children are given access to a wide range of reading materials including books and poems to ignite their interest.

  • Mathematics

    Helping children with their counting skills, understanding numbers and simple addition and subtraction problems.

  • Understanding the world

    Guiding children to make sense of their physical world and their community through opportunities to explore, observe and find out about people, places, technology, and the environment.

  • Expressive Arts and Design

    Enabling children to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials, and for giving them the opportunity to share their thoughts, ideas and feelings through art, music, movement, dance, role-play, design and technology.

Forest school

Forest School originated in Denmark with the idea of encouraging and inspiring children through positive outdoor experiences.

We run a programme of outdoor learning and woodland school experiences for children aged 3-5 years old in our extensive outdoor area. Children have the opportunity to climb and explore trees, tell stories, make trails, build dens and hunt for mini-beasts together.

Forest School gives children an understanding of the natural environment, how to use their own initiative to solve problems, how to co-operate with their friends and appreciate the value of the world around us. The freedom and space to venture outdoors safely gives children the opportunity to discover wonder and excitement outdoors. When children become adults, they won’t remember the days sat indoors watching tv, but will have fond memories of climbing trees, making dens and playing hide and seek.

Our hybrid approach to learning

Hygge is an approach to enable positive well-being and mental health through living in the moment. This approach is complemented by our learning environment which supports ‘in the moment planning’ to allow children to regulate their own learning through their own curiosity and interests.

The Curiosity Approach  offers calm and serene play spaces to enable a natural space without the disturbance of an overstimulating environment. We bring in here a collaboration with Montessori methods to allow children to learn at their own pace.

The Waldorf pedagogy concentrates on age specific developmental needs of the child in sequence with Development Matters (2021) and the will- orientation of physical development.

With Reggio Emilia we offer the opportunity for children to gain control of their learning while making relationships with their peers and interacting with material items, such as interest tables and a lending library with circular interest areas at dinner time to encourage communication.

Grimsbury Manor participates in the Eco-Schools programme, which instils in children a sense of responsibility and cultivates a sustainable mindset to make a difference and to spread such proactive behaviour amongst family and friends, ultimately passing it on to future generations.
