Here at Storal Learning, we understand the importance of nurturing children’s literacy development. “Literacy” refers to so much more than simple reading and writing, but encourages a much wider range of learning – from creative mark making to fostering great imaginations and recognising print in the environment.

Some great ways to contribute to your child’s literacy development are by sharing stories together, in print and in audio, chatting together in funny voices, singing nursery rhymes and exploring picture books.

Our nurseries will again be enjoying Word Book Day this year on Thursday 1st March and would love to see children dressed up as their favourite books characters all week! Stuck for ideas? Here’s a few to get you thinking:

  1. Books characters that wear normal clothes
Think “Harry and the Bucketful of Dinosaurs” or “Matilda”
  2. Books characters that wear stripes
How about “Burglar Bill” or a classic “Where’s Wally?”
  3. DIY costumes
For those last minute outfits, raid your wardrobe and see what you can find! Think “Paddington Bear” with his rain mac, “101 Dalmations” with a spotty black and white t-shirt or choose a favourite Mr Men and Little Miss character and get busy with the face paint!
  4. Fairytale characters
Disney princesses are a World Book Day favourite, but try thinking out of the box – how about “Peter Pan”, “Dorothy” or “King Arthur” for some classic costumes that are guaranteed to be unique.
  5. Repurposed costumes
If all else fails, maybe it’s worth considering reusing those Halloween costumes – the spider from “Charlotte’s Web” or a skeleton from “Funnybones”

Most of all – HAVE FUN! Children’s interest in literacy will be greatly encouraged by the response of those people they look up to the most. As Penny Tassoni says, “A shared story between a child and a familiar, loved adult has a huge impact on children’s interest and motivation for reading later on”.
